iPhone 4, has anyone hurd of android being put onto it yet?

Hi guys I have another wee question for you.....

Has anyone hurd, done, or known of it to be done............To have the Android OS put onto the iPhone 4 as of yet. I know it has been done on the iPhone 3 and 3Gs, but i am yet to find any information or videos of it being completed on the iPhone 4. I know there are plenty of way to simulate android on the iPhone, But i would actually like to be able to put the android OS onto it.

I have cracked all the normal lark with jailbreaking and unlocking these phones, however i am very interested now in seeing how the Android system would run on it.

Thank-you very much, and I look forward to reading your responces.

Deal reached on Georgia Sports Hall of Fame lease

MACON, Ga. (AP) - The Development Authority of Bibb County has agreed to sign a resolution that should mean the museum will remain open in Macon for the next year.

The authority agreed on Tuesday to sign a resolution approving a lease of the hall from the state to the authority.

It also approved an agreement between the authority and NewTown Macon, which will take over management of the hall.

The Telegraph newspaper reports (http://bit.ly/sV6xFr ) attorney Chix Miller says the lease runs for one year with options for two more years. Miller says the Peyton Anderson Foundation has already paid for the first year.

Nearly two years ago, the state put out a request for proposals to take over the sports hall and the Georgia Music Hall of Fame, which was closed in June.

Monti encouraged by bond auction results (AP)

ROME ? Italy's Premier Mario Monti says he's encouraged by the results of two days of bond auctions which saw Italy's borrowing costs drop.

But at a year-end press conference Thursday, he said he didn't consider the market turbulence to be over.

He said his new government was working intensively on preparing a package of measures to get the Italian economy moving again, which will be presented to EU leaders on Jan. 23. He said it would focus on boosting competition and liberalizing the labor market.

Markets had grown fearful over the past few months that Italy can pay off its debts, which stand at around euro1.9 trillion ($2.5 trillion).

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

ROME (AP) ? Italy saw its borrowing rates fall for the second day running as it raised around euro7 billion ($9.2 billion) in a range of auctions Thursday, a further sign that concerns over a default have eased a bit over the past month.

The Bank of Italy said Italy raised euro2.5 billion ($3.3 billion) of ten-year bonds at an average yield of 6.98 percent. That's lower than the 7.56 percent it had to pay at an equivalent auction last month, when investor concerns over the ability of the country to service its massive debts became particularly acute and effectively prompted a change in government.

However, the country's borrowing rate on the key 10-year bond remains uncomfortably close to the 7 percent level widely considered to be unsustainable in the long run. Greece, Ireland and Portugal all had to request financial bailouts after their 10-year bond yields pushed above 7 percent.

In the secondary markets, it continues to hover around the 7 percent mark.

Markets had grown fearful over the past few months that Italy will find it difficult to pay off its massive debts, which stand at around euro1.9 trillion ($2.5 trillion). Next year alone, Italy has some euro330 billion ($431 billion) of debt to refinance.

Italy, which is the eurozone's third-largest economy, also sold euro2.54 billion of 3 year bonds at an average interest rate of 5.62 percent, far lower than the 7.89 percent rate it had to pay last month. It also raised euro803 million in the 7-year auction at a rate of 7.42 percent and euro1.18 billion in nine-year bonds at a yield of 6.7 percent.

Thursday's results come a day after Italy raised euro10.7 billion in a pair of auctions, again at sharply lower rates than those it was forced to pay just a month ago.

The sharp decline in Italy's borrowing costs over the past couple of days suggests that commercial banks from the 17 countries that use the euro may have diverted some money they tapped from emergency loans from the European Central Bank last week to buy the bonds of heavily indebted governments.

It may also suggest rising investor confidence in Italy's recent efforts to reduce its long-term debt through a variety of austerity measures.

Mario Monti, Italy's new premier, is holding a press conference Thursday and the state of the economy is likely to feature large.

Monti's technocratic government got parliamentary approval last week for more spending cuts and tax increases intended to save the country from financial disaster. One of the most controversial aspects of the austerity package is reform of Italy's bloated pension system.

    Lady Gaga's ex-assistant sues her for $400K

Has Lady Gaga been keeping too tight of a hold on her meat-purse strings?

The pop superstar's former assistant claims she's owed nearly $400,000 in overtime pay after attending to Gaga's every need for four weeks in 2009 and then throughout 2010 and into March of this year.

Slideshow: Fashion gone Gaga (on this page)

So, just how much overtime does it take to keep the singer happy, according to Jennifer L. O'Neill's lawsuit?

MORE: Lady Gaga was the top-earning female artist of the year!

The plaintiff claims she worked 7,168 hours of overtime during her period of employment, meaning she was basically on duty almost every hour of every day that she worked for the "Born This Way" artist. Her complaint states that she was paid $1,000 per week for her time in 2009 and then an annual salary of $75,000 for the rest.

    View the lawsuit

But that's just base salary, according to the suit, and does not account for the time O'Neill spent attending to Gaga business "not only in her home, but also during her travels to her global concert tours, from city to city throughout the world, at locales including stadiums, private jets, fine hotel suites, yachts, ferries, trains and tour buses."

O'Neill "was always behind the scenes, and figuratively, if not literally, always at her side," the suit states.

"Jennifer O'Neill's lawsuit is completely without merit," a rep for Gaga tells E! News of the suit, filed Dec. 14 in U.S. District Court in New York.

Story: Trump takes credit for discovering Gaga

The plaintiff is demanding she be paid at least $393,014, encompassing the allegedly unpaid overtime and fair compensation for working 10-hour days.

    On Charles, Rome, Lynch...and Figgins

Bernie's Dawg Blawg: On Charles, Rome, Lynch...and Figgins

    On Charles, Rome, Lynch...and Figgins

No meatloaf today. After all that Christmas Day turkey and fixins I just didn't have the energy to make a meatloaf. If all goes well I should have some leftover turkey for your Tuesday. However, I did want to share a couple really good reads.

First, Ching evaluates?($$) the tight end position with White graduating and Charles possibly leaving for the NFL. Jay Rome ended up redshirting this season and is now on the bench for Coach Fox. Lynch is the often forgotten man at the position. White and Bobo talk like he will more than fill any cleats left behind. There's also a nice interview with Rome by Nabulsi.

Georgia has proven they have the system to support multiple tight ends. And even should Charles turn pro (which many think he will according to the poll) we should still have some quality depth, just inexperienced. Lynch has seen few legitimate snaps and Rome will be just a redshirt freshman. We have a commit in Ty Smith of Colquitt Co as well.

Also, really good read by Clarkson on Bruce Figgins' career as a Dawg and what his graduation meant to his family, especially his mom who is fighting breast cancer. Figgins' road in Athens has been a little bumpy, but he's proven to be a team player and a damn good Dawg. I'm really sad to see him go. I think I get pretty soft and mushy when it comes to players who change positions to help the team. I've heard Richt say on a couple occasions that he's hesitant to hand the ball off to someone who's never had a carry in his career. I get that. But I hope we work 89 into the plan some more in the Outback. Would bark extra loud if he found the endzone.

And I really hope NFL scouts see what he did this year as a fullback and see him as a valuable commodity in a tightend/H-back role. I think he'd do well.?And it couldn't happen to a better man. Stay strong Ms. Figgins and GATA Bruce!

Sadr bloc calls for early elections in Iraq (Reuters)

BAGHDAD (Reuters) ? The head of the political bloc of anti-American Shi'ite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr called on Monday for new elections in Iraq after the biggest crisis in a year saw Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki move against two senior Sunni rivals.

Tensions are rising after Maliki, a Shi'ite, sought the arrest of Sunni Vice President Tareq al-Hashemi - accused of running death squads. Maliki also asked parliament to fire Sunni Deputy Prime Minister Saleh al-Mutlaq.

The head of Sadr's bloc, part of the ruling Shi'ite-led government, said parliament should be dissolved to try resolve the spat, which has raised concerns about a return to sectarian strife since U.S. troops withdrew a week ago.

Seven people were killed earlier on Monday when a suicide car bomber attacked Iraq's interior ministry in Baghdad. It followed a series of explosions on Thursday in the capital in which 72 people were killed.

"We are in a new phase and have found a lot of problems which give no stability to Iraq... so we will discuss this subject with the National Alliance because we are part of it," Bahaa al-Araji, the head of Sadr's bloc, said in a statement in which he also called for "new and early elections."

Support from Sadr's bloc helped Maliki to a second term following nine months of wrangling after an inconclusive election in March 2010. The National Alliance is the powerful bloc formed when Maliki's party linked with the Sadrists and other Shi'ite groups.

The latest turmoil threatens to scupper Iraq's fragile power-sharing deal that splits posts among the Shi'ite National Aliance, the mainly Sunni-backed Iraqiya party and a bloc representing Kurds.

Hashemi and Mutlaq are two of the most senior figures in Iraqiya, which announced a boycott of parliament ten days ago.

    EARLY VOTE

Two senior Sadrist lawmakers said early elections were just one of the possible actions being considered in efforts to try resolve the crisis.

"It is one of the solutions that was presented in case the crisis continues and political blocs fail to reach a solution and Iraqiya insists on continuing to boycott parliament and cabinet sessions," said senior Sadrist lawmaker Amir al-Kinani.

Iraqiya will give an important signal about the future of the power sharing agreement on Tuesday when its members decide whether or not to attend a cabinet meeting.

The party, which is led by secularist Shi'ite former Prime Minister Iyad Allawi but is supported by many Sunnis, said in a statement on Sunday it was willing to participate in talks to resolve the crisis.

"We have received many positive signs from the Iraqiya leaders," said Mushriq Naji, a senior Sadrist lawmaker. "They said they are willing to end this crisis but asked for more time to talk to their top leaders. They asked for two more days."

Violence in Iraq has dropped since the sectarian civil war of 2006-07, when Shi'ite militia and Sunni insurgents often killed thousands of civilians a month.

Many Iraqis fear that the latest political dispute - on clear-cut sectarian lines - could reignite the slaughter, without the buffer of U.S. troops to separate the sides.

Turmoil in Iraq would have a larger impact on the region, where a crisis in Syria is taking on a more sectarian tone and Shi'ite Iran, Sunni Turkey and Sunni Arab Gulf states are looking to increase their influence.

Iraq's Sunni minority has felt marginalized since the rise of the Shi'ite majority after the 2003 U.S.-led invasion that toppled Saddam Hussein.

Sadr, whose Mehdi Army militia once fought U.S. and Iraqi troops, said in a statement on Sunday that the crisis may lead to one-party rule and hurt Maliki's reputation as a statesman.

Sadr ordered his militia to disarm when he joined mainstream politics in recent years, but splinter groups have continued attacks.

On Monday, an Iraqi official said Asaib al-Haq, the biggest Mehdi Army militant splinter group, had offered to lay down arms and form a political movement to take part in the next election.

"They are willing to lay down their weapons and join the political process after the bilateral security agreement was executed and U.S. troops completed their withdrawal," said Mohammed al-Hamed, spokesman for Maliki's National Reconciliation Advisor. The group could not be reached for comment.

East TN organization gives tornado victims new homes

After living in poor conditions since the April storms, the Greene County community has worked together to make sure The Hunley family had a liveable home for this Christmas.

Just a few days ago, the Hunley's were living in unsafe conditions caused by the tornado that hit the county 8 months ago.?

"When the tornado came, it ripped our floors up; we had to rebuild those just to get us through because, you know, we had family members that lost everything, and we were more focused on them," Allison Hunley explained.

Allison's husband Sam lost his job shortly after the storms. Since then, he's spent his time volunteering to help other people get back on their feet.

AIDNET, a Greene County organization, heard the Hunley's story and wanted to help.? They teamed up with Hardin's Chapel Church to purchase and remodel a new mobile home for the Hunleys.

    The Hunleys couldn't be happier.

"There's so much more room! There's no mold for me to have to worry about my children's health. This is the best thing that's happened to our family ever," they told 10 News on Saturday.

Greene County was one of the areas hardest hit by April's tornadoes. 7 people were killed, and dozens of homes and buildings were destroyed.

Happy Holidays: Top apps for your new Android Tablet

So today is Christmas for many of us (or something similar) and for all of you that were lucky enough to tear open the wrapping paper on a brand new ASUS Transformer Prime or Galaxy Tab and are wondering what apps or games to try for that new Android tablet ? we have you covered. Below you?ll find a few awesome choices for that 7 or 10 inches of screen real estate.

Unlike our list of top smartphone apps today we?ll just feature 5 awesome Android tablet apps ? or six. Below are a few of the personal favorites from Android Community that we?ve featured in the past because they are just that great. We?ll start with my all time favorite for showing off graphics.

    Riptide GP
If you?d like to show off the amazing graphics or games available for that new tablet be sure and get Riptide GP. This is the premiere racing game for Android ? only its all on water. This jet-ski style high paced racing game will keep you on the edge of your seat, and the edge of your tablet screen. Controlling jet ski?s by cranking that tablet left and right like a steering wheel sounds fun right? With some of the best graphics on a mobile device this will keep you entertained with hours of gameplay. The water effects in particular are highly impressive.

    Market Link

    Dolphin Browser for Pad
While still currently at a beta level Dolphin Browser is the best 3rd party browser for Android hands-down (if you ask me). The stock tablet browser is quite excellent but Dolphin?s access to gestures, ad-ons and more give the user even more power with their tablet.

    Market Link

    SHADOWGUN
Now this is another game that might cost a few bucks but hopefully you received an extra gift card or two for the holidays. Shadowgun brings Gears of War to Android tablets and is quite impressive. For anyone that loves shooter games this third person shooter has over 8 hours of gameplay and is more of a full featured game than most. With a regular version, THD for Tegra 2 tablets, and now even support for the NVIDIA Tegra 3 this game by far has some of the most impressive graphics I?ve seen on a mobile device to date.

    Market Link, TegraZone

    SwiftKey X Tablet
With Android we have the option for 3rd party keyboard alternatives and they give you the option to customize your entire experience. If the stock keyboard doesn?t sit right with you I?d recommend SwiftKey X Tablet. They offer a complete package with themes, customization, and even an option to learn from the users Facebook, Gmail, or Twitter habits to learn your style. Then their tier-one prediction engine will even save you precious time and keystrokes. SwiftKey X for Tablets also has a split key ?thumb? view to use just the edges for easy typing on the large 10? displays.

    Market Link

Another great alternative is Thumb Keyboard and you can see our hands-on here.

    HD Widgets
Widgets are single handed one of my favorite aspects of Android. Having the power to add anything and everything to your homescreen really makes your device unique to you ? unlike all those iThings. If you?ve seen awesome weather and time icons taking up screen real estate most likely it was Beautiful Widgets or even weatherbug for tablets. My favorite has always been Beautiful Widgets but the new kid on the block is HD Widgets and it currently is what graces my homescreens. Being HD and having that extra polish with color choices, curved and rounded edges and tons of transparency options it really is the best around. While its not a full suite of widgets they have more than enough for any phone or tablet size.

    Market Link

I know I said five but don?t forget to check out Google Currents ? as we are a featured partner over at our sister site SlashGear. Currents is Google?s new RRS style news reader for tablets and is amazing.

We?ll keep this short and sweet so you can all enjoy your new tablet and gadgets (and don?t forget your family). Alternatively you can head to the Android Web Market and check out the specific tablet apps Google themselves recommend.

Have fun and have a Merry Christmas!

Knighs, horses from Buena Park to make Rose Parade

BUENA PARK ? Call them the warriors of the roses.

On Jan. 2, like for the 25 straight years before, a contingent of knights, ambassadors and royalty from Buena Park's Medieval Times will make an appearance in the Rose Parade.

Knights from the Medieval Times in Buena, Jesse Camarena from Downey, John Natividad from Placentia, Jim Collins form Fullerton and William Hainsworth from Anaheim will ride in the Rose Parade.

MICHAEL GOULDING, THE ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER

"It's a unique experience," said knight Jesse Camarena. The upcoming parade will be the Downey resident's fourth appearance. "How many people get to say that they've ridden in the Rose Parade?"

It seems like a Hollywood scripted scene, dashing knights and radiant princesses on horseback, surrounded by roses and waving to cheering crowds.

But it takes a lot of equipment and effort to pull it off.

Medieval Times marketing manager David Manuel said the company uses two horse trailers to haul the 12 horses to Pasadena from Buena Park. Then there are three motor homes for those riding the horses and others helping out.

It's a busy time for the crew of Medieval Times, a Buena Park theater featuring jousting knights, falconry and a four-course meal. Typically, there are three performances on New Year's Eve, ending well after midnight.

Once they make it to Pasadena, the knights may only get an hour or two of sleep before they have to get into costume and bring around the horses. Depending on where they are placed in the parade queue, that could be as early as 5 or 6 a.m. Often, those same knights and royalty return to Buena Park just in time to perform in a couple of New Year's Day shows.

"That's our 'Hell Week,'" said William Hainsworth of Anaheim, the show cast manager.

    Hainsworth was joking.

    Maybe.

"It's six miles (of riding) and you're on the horse for six to seven hours," Hainsworth said.

But the knights and royalty who make the grueling ride in the Rose Parade each year aren't assigned to do it. They sign up for the privilege.

"They want to ride it," Manuel said. "It's the longest parade in the world. The whole world is watching, and they get recognized."

John Natividad's family plans to head to Pasadena to watch him ride by. The 2012 parade will be the Placentia resident's first time there.

"It's a lot of work. We're up early, but I'm excited," Natividad said. "I think it's going to be a really good experience."

Camarena is looking forward to returning for another year.

"It's fun riding with people (in the crowd) smiling and waving," he said. "It's a blast."

From time to time, the parade will inevitably slow to a near stop. When that happens, the knights show off with spontaneous sword fights.

"It gives the crowd on the parade route something to look at," Hainsworth said.

Many of the Medieval Times horses headed to the parade are Andalusian horses, named after a region in southern Spain. Hainsworth said Spanish knights in the Middle Ages favored the muscled steeds.

Before the parade, Medieval Times' ferrier will take off the steeds' metal horseshoes and just hammer in a few specialized nails instead. The nails help the horses grip Colorado Boulevard's pavement, which is too slick for regular horseshoes.

Despite Medieval Times' perennial appearance in the Rose Parade, Manuel said it's not a given.

Analysis: Obama, fellow Democrats hope payroll tax, tea party issues, will hamper GOP in 2012

WASHINGTON (AP) ? For all his problems with the economy, President Barack Obama is getting unexpected help from a Republican Party that seems incapable of capitalizing on its advantages.

Congressional Republicans' fumbling of the payroll tax issue is the latest example of party in-fighting and disarray that gives Democrats hope for the 2012 elections. GOP presidential contenders have tried to distance themselves from the legislative mess. But they might be tarred nonetheless if swing voters decide the party is either inept at governing or too extreme.

The eventual GOP presidential nominee "will be somewhat shackled to the Republican brand," said Democratic strategist Erik Smith, even if congressional Republicans are the ones leading the charge in an unpopular fight over the payroll tax. He said GOP House and Senate candidates will face even more problems.

The Wall Street Journal editorial page ? an important voice among conservatives ? berated Republican lawmakers for their handling of the payroll tax matter. Obama wants to add another year to this year's reduction in the tax, which nearly all workers pay toward Social Security. Senate Republicans, after forcing Democrats to swallow several unrelated concessions, joined in an overwhelmingly bipartisan vote to approve only a two-month tax cut extension, with plans to revisit the issue next year.

But House Republicans, who generally disliked the payroll tax cut from the start, refused to concur. Unless something changes in the next 10 days, the payroll tax rate will return to 6.2 percent on Jan. 1, after one year at 4.2 percent. That would cost a family making $50,000 about $1,000.

Republican congressional leaders' actions "might end up re-electing the president before the 2012 campaign even begins in earnest," the Journal's editorial page said Wednesday.

Democrats allege that congressional Republicans are essentially controlled by tea party activists whose tax and spending agendas are outside the political mainstream.

"Tea Party Republicans blocked a bipartisan bill to extend President Obama's payroll tax cut," the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee said in a fundraising email Tuesday, minutes after a key House vote. House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi told reporters, "the tea party tail is wagging the elephant."

Democratic strategists hope to remind voters of last summer's near-calamity over raising the limit on the debt ceiling. Then, as now, House Speaker John Boehner struggled to control his GOP caucus and to calculate which bills can and cannot pass. These Democrats want to paint the Republican Party as an out-of-touch institution that would rather stand for rigidly conservative principles than solve the nation's problems.

"I think the tea party-engendered dysfunction has the potential to really get the electorate's attention," said Jared Bernstein, a former Obama administration economist now with the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities. "At this point, the system is crippled by them."

All of this, of course, may be wishful thinking by Democrats. Republicans crushed them in the 2010 elections, giving the GOP control of the House and many governorships. Unemployment and other economic indicators bode badly for Obama's re-election hopes, and the payroll tax fuss may seem a musty memory by next November.

One other worry looms. If the payroll tax impasse remains unresolved, working Americans' taxes will rise by billions of dollars next year. Economists say that would depress spending and slow job growth, at least somewhat. Even if more voters blame Republicans than Democrats, Obama could end up as a net loser politically, given that the economic climate already is deeply troublesome for him. Also, unemployment benefits will be curbed if the legislative package remains stalled.

Analysts in both parties question whether Republicans will take such a risk.

"I think the likely scenario is some kind of bill passes in January, probably with retroactive benefits," Bernstein said. "It's a real pain for businesses," he said, because they would have to adjust their employees' tax withholding programs yet again.

Such an outcome, however, might help Obama and other Democrats politically. Restoration of the lower payroll tax rate would hold the economy harmless. But independent voters might think Republican lawmakers sought to raise their taxes. And hard-core conservative voters might blame those same lawmakers for surrendering to a tax cut they dislike.

Democrats note that Republicans fought fiercely to prevent Bush-era income tax cuts from expiring on schedule, even for the wealthiest people. GOP leaders say income tax cuts do more to stimulate growth than do payroll tax reductions.

The payroll tax impasse seems to have cost Republicans another political victory. In House-Senate negotiations, they forced Obama to agree to an expedited decision on a proposed transcontinental oil pipeline opposed by environmental groups. But it was included in the Senate-passed package with the two-month tax extension. Republicans who gloated over Obama's concession on the pipeline now have nothing to show for their efforts.

Republicans in Congress don't need more bad publicity. Americans hold Congress in extremely low regard, but they put more blame on Republicans than Democrats.

A recent poll by the Pew Research Center found that a record-high 50 percent of Americans say the current Congress is less effective than most. By nearly 2-to-1, "more blame Republican leaders than Democratic leaders for this," Pew found. "By wide margins, the GOP is seen as the party that is more extreme in its positions, less willing to work with the other side to get things done, and less honest and ethical in the way it governs. And for the first time in over two years, the Democratic Party has gained the edge as the party better able to manage the federal government."

Such findings may add pressure on Boehner and other Republican leaders to find a way out of the payroll tax cut dilemma.

    EU airline carbon charge 'valid'

EU plans to levy an emissions tax on airlines are valid, according to the European Court of Justice (ECJ).

The decision means all airlines flying to and from the 27 states of the European Union will face a tax on emissions from 1 January.

US, Canadian and other carriers argue the charges violate climate change and aviation pacts.

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton issued a warning of "appropriate action" should the charges go ahead.

American carriers argue that the taxes contravene the Open Skies Agreement, which allows airlines to fly between any EU country and any point in the US.

    No delay

Airlines will now be subject to the Emissions Trading System (ETS), used to charge industries such as oil refineries, power stations and steel works for CO2 emissions, as part of Europe's efforts against climate change.

"Application of the emissions trading scheme to aviation infringes neither the principles of customary international law at issue nor the Open Skies Agreement" across the Atlantic, the court decided.

"It is only if the operators of such aircraft choose to operate a commercial air route arriving at or departing from an airport situated in the EU that they are subject to the emissions trading scheme," it added.

As a result of this choice, the EU system "infringes neither the principle of territoriality nor the sovereignty of third states, since the scheme is applicable to the operators only when their aircraft are physically in the territory of one of the member states of the EU".

The EU has made it clear that it will not bow to US pressure following Wednesday's decision.

"We will neither abandon nor delay (the Emissions Trading System). The measure will fully enter force on January 1, 2012," said the spokesman for EU climate change commissioner, Connie Hedegaard.

Graphic shows the cumulative death toll from the uprising in Syria

(AP) ? As government troops advanced on a village in northwestern Syria, activists say the terrified residents fled into a valley for fear of being arrested or worse. What happened next, one of the activists said, was "an organized massacre."

The troops surrounded the valley and unleashed a barrage of rockets, tank shells, bombs and gunfire in an hours-long assault, according to two human rights groups and a witness, killing more than 100 people and leaving no survivors in one of the bloodiest days of a crackdown by President Bashar Assad against a nine-month popular uprising.

The White House said it was "deeply disturbed" by Tuesday's attack, France called it a "murderous spiral," and the Arab League reminded the Assad regime of its responsibilities to protect its civilians.

The United Nations says more than 5,000 people have died since March as Syria has sought to put down the uprising ? part of the Arab Spring of protests that has toppled long-serving unpopular leaders in Tunisia, Egypt and Libya.

Members of Syria's opposition said the bloodshed outside the village of Kfar Owaid, about 30 miles from the northern border with Turkey in Idlib province, was evidence of the authoritarian leader's intent to intensify its crackdown on the uprising before Arab League observers arrive in the country Thursday. The death toll from two days of violence this week topped 200, including up to 70 army defectors killed near the city of Idlib, the activists said.

"It was an organized massacre," said Rami Abdul-Rahman, head of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a British-based activist group. "The troops surrounded people, then killed them."

Kfar Owaid is part of the rugged mountainous region of Jabal al-Zawiyah, the scene of clashes between troops and army defectors, as well as weeks of intense anti-government protests.

One Kfar Owaid villager who is an anti-government activist told The Associated Press by telephone that scores of residents and activists had fled to the nearby Budnaya Valley ahead of the advancing troops. He said the security forces had lists of names of those who organized massive anti-regime protests recently in the village.

Those who fled to the valley were completely surrounded by troops, said the activist, who identified himself only as Abu Rabih for fear of government reprisal. The troops then opened fire with tanks, rockets and heavy machine guns, he said, adding that they also used bombs filled with nails to increase the number of casualties.

He said 110 people were killed in the attack, with 56 of them buried in Kfar Owaid on Wednesday. Others were buried in nearby villages.

Abdul-Rahman corroborated the Kfar Owaid witness account. The group, which uses a network of local activists to collect information on the crackdown, said 111 people from the village were killed Tuesday.

All of those in the valley were unarmed civilians and activists, with no armed military defectors among them, the rights groups said.

The Jabal al-Zawiyah region has been under intense attack by government forces since Saturday, Abu Rabih said.

Syrian officials have not commented on the allegations.

Assad agreed Monday to allow foreign monitors into Syria under an Arab League plan aimed at stopping the bloodshed. The huge toll Monday and Tuesday from the crackdown has reinforced opposition suspicions that Assad is trying to stall before a new round of international condemnation and sanctions. His regime already has been left isolated and under pressure from the Arab world as well as the West.

The Obama administration reacted to the latest reports by renewing its call for Assad to step down, saying he "does not deserve to rule Syria."

"The United States is deeply disturbed by credible reports that the Assad regime continues to indiscriminately kill scores of civilians and army defectors, while destroying homes and shops and arresting protesters without due process," the White House said in a statement read by spokesman Jay Carney, warning that the international community could take more steps against Syria.

State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland added that the stepped-up violence signaled that Syria's acceptance of the Arab League plan is merely a "stalling tactic."

"This is not the behavior of a government that is getting ready to implement the Arab League proposals," she told reporters, adding later that: "We've got lots of promises as the government continues to mow down its own people."

French Foreign Ministry spokesman Bernard Valero said "everything must be done to stop this murderous spiral into which Bashar Assad is leading his people more every day." He added that the U.N. Security Council must "pass a firm resolution demanding the end to this repression."

The German government's human rights commissioner, Markus Loening, called for an immediate end to violence against deserters and demonstrators.

Turkey's Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said "it is unacceptable" that so many people were killed after Syria agreed to an Arab League plan to halt the bloodshed.

In Cairo, Arab League chief Nabil Elaraby expressed deep concern about reports of an escalation in violence and appealed to Damascus to shoulder its responsibilities to protect civilians in compliance with its pledges to abide by the league's plan.

The Arab League plan calls for Syria to halt its crackdown, open talks with the opposition, withdraw military forces from city streets and allow in human rights workers and journalists. The 22-member Arab League has also suspended Syria's membership and leveled economic and diplomatic sanctions.

Despite the new violence, the Arab League appeared to be going ahead with its plans to send in its first delegation of monitors on Thursday. An Arab League official said the second team of observers ? 30 experts in military affairs and human rights ? will head for Syria on Sunday, led by Lt. Gen. Mohammed Ahmed Mustafa of Sudan.

Another team of 100 observers will leave for Syria within two weeks, he said.

Syria's main opposition group, the Syrian National Council, described this weeks killings as "brutal massacres and genocide," saying it has urged the U.N. Security Council to hold an emergency meeting on Syria. The SNC also asked the international community to help protect Syrian citizens.

The conflict, which began with peaceful protests in March, has become increasingly militarized in recent weeks, with clashes nearly every day between troops and army defectors who have joined the movement against Assad. Idlib province has witnessed some of the most intense clashes.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said security forces shot and killed three people in the Damascus suburb of Zabadani and one in the northern town of Saraqeb. It added that a large force stormed the town of Dael in the southern province of Daraa, wounding dozens of people. Another group, the Local Coordination Committees, said 15 people were killed Wednesday ? part of a death toll of more than 100 people this week.

On Monday, security forces killed up to 70 army defectors as they were deserting their military posts in Idlib, activists said.

The accounts could not be independently confirmed because Syria has banned most foreign journalists and places heavy restrictions on the work of local reporters.

In Damascus, meanwhile, the Iranian Embassy said five Iranian engineers who work at an electricity station in the restive Syrian city of Homs were kidnapped Tuesday ? a possible attempt by Assad's staunchest ally to corroborate his regime's claim that armed gangs are to blame for the anti-government uprising.

Exclusive: N.Korea military backs Kim heir but will share power (Reuters)

BEIJING (Reuters) ? North Korea's new young leader will have to share power with an uncle and the military after the death of his father Kim Jong-il as the isolated country shifts to collective rule from strongman dictatorship, a source with close ties to Pyongyang and Beijing said.

The source added that the military, which is trying to develop a nuclear arsenal, has pledged allegiance to the untested Kim Jong-un who takes over the family dynasty that has ruled North Korea since it was founded after world War Two.

The source also said Beijing was only notified of Kim's death earlier on Monday, the same day that North Korean state television broadcast the news. Kim died on Saturday.

The source declined to be identified but has correctly predicted events in the past, telling Reuters about the North's first nuclear test in 2006 before it took place.

The situation in North Korea appeared stable after the military gave its backing to Kim's son and successor, Kim Jong-un, the source said.

"It's very unlikely," the source said when asked about the possibility of a military coup. "The military has pledged allegiance to Kim Jong-un."

With no military strongman, North Korea will be ruled by collective leadership, including Kim Jong-un, his uncle and the military, the source said.

Jang Song-thaek, 65, brother-in-law of Kim Jong-il and the younger Kim's uncle, was named in 2009 to the National Defense Commission, the supreme leadership council Kim Jong-il led as head of the military state.

The source also said the North Korea test-fired a missile on Monday to warn the United States not to make any moves against it. Pyongyang also had no immediate plans for further tests barring an escalation of tensions.

"With the missile test, (North) Korea wanted to deliver the message that they have the ability to protect themselves," the source said.

"But (North) Korea is unlikely to conduct a nuclear test in the near future unless provoked" by the United States and South Korea, the source said.

The North's nuclear program has been a nagging source of tensions with the international community. Pyongyang carried out nuclear tests in 2006 and 2009, and has quit six-party talks with South Korea, the United States, China, Japan and Russia on abandoning its nuclear program and returning to the Non-Proliferation Treaty.

China, the North's closest ally and biggest provider of aid,

on Tuesday welcomed the new North Korean leader to visit after his father's death. Chinese President Hu Jintao and Vice-President Xi Jinping also visited the hermit state's embassy in Beijing to express their condolences on Tuesday. Roads leading to the embassy were blocked.

Still the prospect of instability on its northeastern border worries China. North Korea has been pressed by China to denuclearize and is willing to do so on condition that North and South Korea, the United States and China sign an armistice replacing a 1953 ceasefire agreement, the source said.

The two Koreas have been divided for decades and remain technically at war since their 1950 to 1953 conflict ended with an armistice but no peace agreement. The United States backed the South, while China supported the North in that conflict.

Pyongyang also is convinced there are U.S. nuclear weapons in South Korea and demands Washington pull them out, the source said.

Impoverished and squeezed by international sanctions for conducting its nuclear and missile tests, North Korea has increasingly turned to Beijing for help to fill the gap left by the drying up of economic assistance from South Korea and the United States.
