For my entire life I have earned my living as a writer, first in New York City and then in Hollywood. Unfortunately that world has been undergoing drastic changes, and I, along with hundreds of older writers, have felt the impact. Many sleepless nights over the last two years have been spent agonizing about how to continue to write, publish, and find an audience. When a former student suggested a marketer, I dithered. Finally I succumbed, though I had no idea what that decision would entail. I jumped off the cliff willingly, and totally blind. Nothing I have ever done has been as difficult, frightening, or challenging. And nothing else has made me feel more alive.
Let me back track. Initially, I began by writing articles over thirty years ago for the New York Times Magazine section and Cosmopolitan. When my first husband was hired at The Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles, I, of course, moved there with him, though I had no idea what the move would impact my career. Then I had an utterly Hollywood experience. My husband and I went to a party. There I met the story editor for The Waltons. Though I didn't reveal this to her, that was one of the two shows I watched on TV. Instead I talked about my new agent, the screenplay I had written to obtain same: all true. She could have checked. Besides, I am congenitally honest. I did tell her how much I liked her show. She suggested I call her if I had any story ideas for her. I came up with five, the first one in the middle of the night when I found myself sitting up in bed thinking about Grandpa Walton, and how the family might react to the heart attack I was going to inflict upon him.
That woman hired me to write my first script. Thus began my career in Hollywood. I have written many scripts that I have been paid for, written teleplays that have been produced, taught screenwriting at both UCLA and USC, and had a satisfying and creative life. None of which prepared me for taking on the world of technology, web sites, Facebook, and other social media networks.
My marketing maven informed me I needed a new website, one that was interactive. I had no idea what that would entail, or how much I would have to do to create it. No one in my small town knew how to produce a website using WordPress. Someone managed to put one up, but it didn't function properly. In the meantime, I had learned how to add text to each tab, different if it was a 'page' or a 'post' tab, drop and drag a picture, a video, a URL. Getting a headache? So did I.
A year has gone by. My head is still spinning. I have taken notes on all that I have learned from the woman who did create my new, interactive website. I have also learned how to use my new business page at Facebook, how to tweet, write articles like this one, create a power point presentation so I can speak to women's groups about my memoir/workbook, and on and on.
You may be thinking you're too old for this! Why bother?
My answer, after much soul searching is: because we're not dead. I, for one, am healthy, active, and very much here. I love to write. I want to help others by writing about my experiences and the experiences of my friends. If I was going to continue my creative life, I was going to have to learn all this tech stuff even though it felt totally foreign to me. I won't lie: much of the learning was unpleasant. But now I am communicating with folks I have never met, and with many of my daughters' friends. All of this effort has exercised my brain. I feel more alive then when I began. If you are stymied by this new tech and social media world as I was, find someone who can help you learn about it. Do a few hours a day, not six or seven like I did. It might even be enjoyable simply because it's new, or because it connects you with your kids, or just because it exercises your brain cells. I'm told that doing that prolongs life, another big plus. What do you have to lose but a little time?

Two years ago, American student Zeke Rucker was brutally beaten and left for dead at a Cancun resort in what some believe may have been a savage act of cartel violence. NBC's Janet Shamlian reports.
A spring break packed with warm beaches and partying until all hours has increasingly become a reward for tens of thousands of college students every year. But those breaks can be far from carefree, as one young American found out.
Joseph "Zeke" Rucker had gone to Cancun in 2010 for a relaxed holiday before starting law school, but less than a day after his arrival, a brutal, as-yet unsolved apparent attack left him with permanent injuries.
Rucker and his family told the TODAY Show that the attack came outside his hotel when he was resting on a lounge by the pool after a night spent clubbing. He had gone to Mexico without any particular spring break safety concerns: ?No, not at all. I mean, everyone does this, right? How could it possibly hurt someone??
It?s true that tens of thousands of students party in Cancun annually without harm. But Rucker wasn?t so lucky: He was found by that hotel pool unconscious with multiple skull fractures. He remembers nothing of what happened, but his parents say they?ll never forget the phone call from a doctor who told them that their son was on a ventilator and near death.
Live Poll
Would you allow your kids to travel to Mexico for spring break?
The hotel never reported the attack, according to Cancun police.
?You just can?t believe it and everything become surreal form that point on,? Annie Rucker, Joseph's mom, said, ?and you?re just living in a nightmare.
The organization Fight Back! On Spring Break says that while students should have fun, they must remain cautious on spring break, especially when drinking alcohol (There is no evidence this played a part in Rucker?s situation.) According to a University of Wisconsin study, 75 percent of college males and 43 percent of females reported being intoxicated on a daily basis during spring break, the organization says.
Erin Weed, founder of the organization, says drinking or drugging and any sort or mood altering substance is going to affect one?s personal judgments.
?Personal safety comes down to smart decisions,? Weed told TODAY.com. ?We don?t want to be victim blaming, but at the same time we do live in a world where we must acknowledge people with bad intentions. We don?t need to be paranoid, but we always need to have a safety plan, whether on campus or in Mexico.?
Fight Back! offers the following tips for students to protect themselves:
Be responsible. Pace yourself if you choose to drink, and avoid hard alcohol or other drinks that are powerful and have fast effects. (And remember that drunks make easy targets.)
If you do decide to drink, know the liquor laws of wherever you?ll be vacationing. Drinking and driving is always dangerous, so avoid this by having a safe mode of transportation home planned before you go out.
Try to go the ATM in groups, but avoid being complacent about safety because you?re traveling in numbers. Also try to go during daylight hours. When you approach the ATM, do a full 360 degree scan, looking completely around you to see if anyone is hanging out where they shouldn?t be. When punching in your pin number, use your other hand to cover the keypad. Always be on the lookout for anyone suspicious. If someone is creeping you out, go to another ATM.
Rucker remained in a coma for weeks after his attack. It took months for him to walk and talk again. Law school was put on hold for him to relearn the basics.
?I was certainly brain damaged, you know,? he said. ?If I were to describe how I was, it was like I was sort of a small child.?
Mexican police told TODAY that Rucker?s case is unusual, and indeed, Cancun?s tourist beaches are exempt from a U.S. State Department?s warning about travel to Mexico. But that doesn?t mean Mexican tourist hot spots are immune from the troubles roiling that country. Last week, 22 cruise ship passengers were robbed at gunpoint while ashore in the tourist haven of Puerto Vallarta.
?To an American, it's surreal that something could happen like it did to me,? Rucker said. ?And basically, no one cares. The hotel doesn't care, the police don't care and there was no real justice.?
Weed says that is key to keep in mind.
?Many times students say what happens on spring break, stays on spring break,? she said. ?This is a very popular moniker. Clearly based on this example, it?s just not true.?

Many people believe that they know what is best when it comes to selling their home. They have lived there for years and know what makes their home appealing. It is totally understandable to have these feelings as the owner and seller of a home. There is a pride in ownership, and most people have extremely strong feelings regarding their home. A seller must put this pride aside and listen to his or her real estate agent when it comes to preparing the home for a quick sale.
An experienced real estate agent will be able to assist in staging the home or recommend someone that specializes in staging a home for a speedy sale. This may include uncluttering the home to allow prospective buyers to get a true feel of the home?s size. It will also include removing all personal artifacts such as family photos and religious items. The real estate agent will also suggest minor repairs that will add to the appeal of the home. Painting worn walls and steaming carpets are often necessary in preparing the home. If the buyer is willing to make these changes himself, these tasks can be fairly inexpensive but really make a huge difference in beautifying a home.
When selling a home, it just makes sense to listen to the expert; a real estate agent is that expert. This is especially true in a tough housing market like we find today. They will guide the seller in the right direction to sell the home as quickly as possible. After all, a real estate agent is working for the seller on a commission basis, and he or she will not get paid until the home is sold.

This may in turn have an adverse effect on the health of the people living in the houses. Roof repair services can find and fix the problems as soon as possible so as to stop any mishap.
A small population of rattlesnakes that already is in decline in southern Illinois faces a new and unexpected threat in the form of a fungus rarely seen in the wild, researchers report. The finding matches reports of rattlesnake deaths in the northeast United States.
The eastern massasauga rattlesnake (Sistrurus catenatus catenatus), a candidate for protection under the federal Endangered Species Act, suffers from habitat loss and environmental stresses wherever it is found, said University of Illinois comparative biosciences visiting instructor and wildlife veterinarian Matthew Allender, who led the health investigation. Long-term population studies of the snake ? in Illinois and elsewhere ? had never turned up evidence of debilitating fungal infections. But in 2008, biologists studying the snake reported to Allender that they had found three sick snakes in a park in southern Illinois, all with disfiguring lesions on their heads. The snakes died within three weeks of their discovery. A fourth snake with a similar syndrome was discovered in the same park in the spring of 2010.
Allender conducted necropsies on the snakes and identified the pathogen that had killed them: Chrysosporium, a fungus that plagues portions of the pet reptile industry but is not normally seen in the wild, he said.
"Chrysosporium causes disease in bearded dragons and in other snakes and it's a bad bug," Allender said. "We see it in captive animals worldwide, but we don't typically find it in free-ranging animals."
Chrysosporium also is emerging as a dangerous infection in humans with weakened immune systems, he said.
Shortly after he first presented his findings at a meeting of the Fish and Wildlife Service, Allender heard from other biologists about similar infections in snakes in the northeast United States.
"They seem to be having a similar problem in timber rattlesnakes in New Hampshire and Massachusetts," Allender said. Although biologists have sporadically identified Chrysosporium in those snakes, the symptoms they report ? facial swelling and ulcers and malformations of the jaw ? are the same, he said. These infections also occurred only within the last five years.
"Fungal pathogens have been increasingly associated with free-ranging epidemics in wildlife, including the well-known effects of Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis on frog populations globally and white-nosed syndrome in bats," Allender wrote in a December 2011 report in Emerging Infectious Diseases. "Both of these diseases cause widespread and ongoing deaths in these populations that seriously threaten biodiversity across the United States."
Allender sees this new occurrence of a fungal infection in endangered snakes as a "yellow flag" that warrants more study.
"Wildlife diseases and human health are not that different," he said. "And often wildlife are our window into a weakened environment that leads to disease in both people and animals."

Numerous are combating this prolonged recession. Listening to the news, it doesn?t expect to be getting any better in some unspecified time in the future. Meanwhile, those who recently retired thinking they had a large enough nest egg or pension to aid them, have watched the markets slash the value within their investments and pensions, while aprs keep savings accounts providing little or no value at all. Some individuals just need a dollop of extra help financially, individually or others with their family. Many people should seriously consider home equity release schemes.
What is equity release? The essential definition of equity release is just finding a solution to getting money due to an investment. For everyone people, the most significant investment they?ve might be their home, so most plans are mortgages on property assets called lifetime mortgages. Those are in no way standard mortgage, like the ones having just been paid in full once retirement has been attained. Rather they?re really a specialist lifetime mortgage which includes specific features of the people over 55 yrs of age that they?re restricted to.
The rest of your life mortgage is principally duplicate re-mortgaging your home. However, the financial adviser who works to created the equity release plan has a volume of potential options to offer any prospective applicant. Many individuals like having their equity release loan paid your family in a, one-off lump sum payment ? just like a traditional mortgage. Others might require the tax free lump sum payment for being paid in stages, as an alternative to abruptly. A less common request is made for your cash to be paid to be a regular income.
What is able to the tax-free cash be accustomed for? This arrangement is excellent for someone trying to enhance their retirement lifestyle as a result of renovating their house, build an extension or build a gift to their children. By re-investing funds taken out of this property are going to have longer term positive effect on the ultimate value of the property after it is all mixed up sold. This is of curiosity for your children & their inheritance.
Therefore, people taking a look at a release of equity should not consider lifetime mortgages being a poor choice, as although these are taking cash-out, they?re upgrading the home & hopefully adding or helping to retain its value.
What are the choices? There are further methods available in a potential applicant when contemplating equity release schemes. They can now pay for the interest on an monthly basis, therefore keeping the magnitude of the equity release loan fixed. This example is a fixed interest only lifetime mortgage, as well as a great way of keeping how large debt at bay.
These plans are actually given much thought as there is also the flexibility to choose how much of the interest you wish to pay. Therefore, you are able to work at your own budget.
Another option for all those wanting to make extra savings or pensions would be the capability to release the equity release funds slowly; in the tax free cash being withdrawn in smaller increments being a wage would. Which means that an additional level of funds can be made usable with a monthly basis, making it not difficult to supplement pensions or savings and not must return to work or sell the domain entirely.
If ever you choose flexibility of when & simply how much you withdraw then getting a drawdown equity release plan may well be considered. After taking an initial tranche of capital from a facility stimulated by the obligation provider, next you can draw ad-hoc payments from thus reserve whenever required. Therefore, should a new car, boiler or holiday requires payment the funds are accessible within a 1-2 week window.
In both of such examples, the value of a typical home equity release loan might be repaid when the residence is sold; either if downsizing, or if the insurance cover holders move into care. Alternatively, while the inheritance estate is dispersed, the equity release loan is going to be a section of the liability at the value of your house.
How is ta lime mortgage repaid? When the residence is sold, then the equity release plan is repaid. Alternatively, if a participant in the family wishes to retain ownership of a typical property, maybe for letting or investment purposes, they will pay back the equity release loan ? possibly through a residential or buy-to-let mortgage arrangement.
However, what is vital may be that there are options for those struggling financially inside their retirement, when sitting on a significant family home. Often people assume that financing the property might be shifting a debt into the next generation, however it is associated with a house asset ? and as such passes at the option of keeping the family home, or selling it afterwards. Hopefully, once property values do start to rise it may have better market values than throughout the current recession.
Sydney, Feb 20 (IANS) Showering brain cancer cells with vitamin C softens them up for radiation therapy and hastens their death.
Patries Herst from the University of Otago, with Melanie McConnell investigated how combining high dose vitamin C with radiation affected the survival of cancer cells isolated from brain tumours, and compared this with the survival of normal cells.
They found that a high dose of vitamin C by itself caused DNA damage and cell death which was much more pronounced, especially before radiation, the journal Free Radical Biology and Medicine reports.
Herst says brain cancer patients have a poor prognosis because these tumours are aggressive and very resistant to radiation therapy.
?We found that high dose vitamin C makes it easier to kill these cells by radiation therapy,? says Herst, according to an Otago statement.
She says there has long been a debate about the use of high dose vitamin C in the treatment of cancer. High dose vitamin C specifically kills a range of cancer cells in the lab and in animal models.
?If carefully designed clinical trials show that combining high dose vitamin C with radiation therapy improves patient survival, there may be merit in combining both treatments for radiation-resistant cancers, such as glioblastoma multiforme,? says Herst.

Whether you're excitedly planning on seeing "Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance" this weekend or scoffing at the absurdity of paying to watch Nic Cage urinate fire (in 3D), there's an ugly publicity battle going on behind-the-scenes between the Disney corporation and a 68-year-old former comic book writer in ill health. It concerns the complicated field of U.S. Copyright Law and is a clear example of the lack of ethics that exist in both the comic book industry, an artform that touts its super-heroics and moral inspiration, and the Walt Disney Company.
Gary Friedrich, former writer for Marvel Comics has been involved in a long dispute over his claim as the creator of "Ghost Rider," the motorcycle-riding, flaming-skullhead monster that made a worldwide gross of $228 million when Sony Pictures adapted the character for the big screen in 2007. He brought a lawsuit toward Marvel, in an attempt to get royalties he felt he was due. After a protracted legal battle -- during which Marvel became under the employ of the Disney Corporation and its massive defense team -- the court has settled the dispute and Friedrich now finds himself owing the billion-dollar media empire more money than he has.
The Facts of the Case Friedrich claims that he developed the character independently in 1968, and sold it to Marvel for publication, writing the first appearances of the character in 1972. However, according to Friedrich's legal team, Marvel failed to register "Ghost Rider" with the U.S. Copyright Office, and as such, the copyrights returned to him in 2001. Friedrich filed suit with the company when the first movie came out to obtain royalties he felt belonged to him; during that time he sold "Ghost Rider" merchandise at comic book conventions, with the reasoning that it was his property to exploit.
The case was finally resolved in December of 2011, with the court ruling that when Friedrich endorsed his paychecks for the freelance writing gig, he was consenting to handing over the ownership of the character to Marvel. At that time, Marvel's regular practice was to include copyright language on the paycheck -- meaning you had to hand over the copyrights when it was time to get paid. Marvel, now backed by Disney, countersued Friedrich for selling unlicensed merchandise of their property, and last week, Marvel/Disney (let's call them Misney) agreed to drop the suit if Friedrich pays $17,000.
Currently Friedrich is unemployed and suffering from various health ailments. Many writers and artists in the comic community have rallied to set up a donation plan for him to help fight his legal fees, hoping that some of the people who are going to pay to $17 to see a 3D screening of "Ghost Rider" this weekend, are willing to set aside a few dollars toward one of the people who actually made the movie possible.
(And if you feel so inclined to donate a few dollars, do it HERE.)
Now there are a couple of important details to take into consideration: 1.) Friedrich's level of complete ownership is disputed by both "Ghost Rider" artist Mike Ploog and editor Roy Thomas. Unfortunately, there aren't accurate records from forty years ago, so it's a mater of hearsay. However, no one disputes that Friedrich is at least co-creator. 2.) Selling merchandise before the copyright case was settled was not a wise move, and was going to provoke the ire of the big corporation. 3.) Misney had every right to counter-sue to protect their property.
Here's Why Marvel and Disney Are the Villains Because they're making an example out of Gary Friedrich to scare away generations of comic creators from attempting to fight for a share of profits from the work they provided. In this case, a cease-and-desist would have been enough to prevent Friedrich from stepping out of bounds moving forward. Whether you side with Friedrich's specific claim or not, it's indicative of unfair business practices that have plagued the comics industry since the first appearance of Superman. Comic companies want to scare away men -- now reaching their retirement age -- from trying to collect on work they did as freelancers. That work now generates millions of dollars of revenue in movie sales and merchandising.
Misney are hypocrites because they present themselves as a "universe of heroes." They're not. They're a brand of merchandise. Marvel is a brand like Ed Hardy or Hasbro or McDonald's are a brand. It's not about artistic integrity. Misney want you to buy their Ghost Rider comics, buy their Ghost Rider action figures, buy their Ghost Rider Slurpee cups, buy their Ghost Rider t-shirt and buy their Ghost Rider video games. They don't care about your loyalty to the character, they care about your dependence as a consumer. They don't care if you defend them or not; they merely want you to buy their stuff and look the other way while they drive competitors out of business (the competitor in this case is: the co-creator of the new toy they're trying to sell you, 68 years old, struggling to make ends meet and foolishly signed a contract 40 years ago that never accounted for new forms of media presentation like a movie.) Comic companies like Marvel and DC display no ethical responsibilities to the creators who are generating the content they are trying to sell to Hollywood. And to be fair, that's their prerogative. We shouldn't be shocked at a corporation's inhumanity because corporations aren't people; with the national focus on the depressed economy, people should know by now that it's up to the audience (as voters, consumers, etc.) to change a system they think is fundamentally broken or willingly accept working under a system where the only aim can be staying on a corporation's good side.
The History of Comic Creators Getting Screwed It wasn't until relatively recently that contracts in the comic book industry became reasonably professional. Movie royalties were never a consideration for many years because comic book movies were never a thing that seemed possible. So there are decades worth of bad business deals where artists and writers had no leverage. Whether you're a fan of the original comics or have come to discover Batman and the Avengers through their massive box office success, there's a responsibility to be aware of the complicated and unethical history of the men who gave you Superman, Captain America and many more. My struggle to gain weight began only prior to be able to entering senior high school whenever within the summer time I acquired several ins within elevation. From 5?7, I barely tipped the actual scales in 82 lbs.
We grew upward but not really away regardless how a lot food We devoured. When I got expectant at age 21, We idea sure I would packs upon a few lbs. I did however it all was the short-term gain. After giving birth, We dropped all my bodyweight inside a day and also remaining the actual medical center putting on our normal clothing.
From twenty-two, I joined the fitness system as well as has been put upon a putting on weight diet. We happened like an only underweight girl in the team. Every day time upon getting into the gym, we all were considered. For the obese women the bell would wedding ring and everybody might perk when they dropped the pound. Getting the sole underweight girl, the female would each and also each period ring the girl bell and they?d almost all begin to cheer until reality emerge as well as She would state, ?oops?. It again was humiliating in order to state the least. We quickly give up the actual health club because it appeared the rigorous work out just offered to improve the previously very fast fat burning capacity burning up all the additional calories.

NEW YORK (AP) ? The Grammy Awards' warm embrace of Chris Brown three years after his assault of Rihanna has drawn the ire of viewers who claim the controversial R&B star shouldn't have been rewarded with such attention.
Brown was front-and-center three times during Sunday's Grammys. He won best R&B album for "F.A.M.E.," he performed a single from his upcoming album, "Turn Up the Music," and he opened a dance tribute to "Soul Train" creator Don Cornelius.
The imagery of Brown's Grammy glory was striking because it was, literally, a return to the scene of the crime. On the eve of the 2009 Grammys, Brown beat his then-girlfriend Rihanna, for which he later pled guilty to a charge of assault and was sentenced to five years of probation and six months of community labor.
Since then, Brown has worked to repair his image, undergone domestic violence counseling and rediscovered popularity with his hit album "F.A.M.E. (Forgiving All My Enemies)." Last year, his restraining order was eased. The former order required Brown to stay 50 yards away from 23-year-old Rihanna, but the restriction was reduced to 10 yards if they were at a music industry event. Rihanna also performed Sunday but the two never shared the stage.
On Sunday evening, Twitter was abuzz with questions of Brown's significant role in the proceedings. Many critics argued against the Grammys' decision to celebrate Brown and endorse his comeback.
New Yorker music critic Sasha Frere-Jones called Brown's return "one of the Grammys' weirdest choices ever," and cited R&B singer Drake as the more deserving star in the genre to celebrate.
In an op-ed, Valerie Strauss for The Washington Post said that while people deserve second chances, "That doesn't mean they deserve a chance to strut around the Grammy stage a few years after being convicted of felony assault."
Jeffrey Goldberg for The Atlantic tweeted: "I don't look for the Grammys for moral clarity, but, really? Do the words 'felony assault' mean anything at all?"
Grammy producer Ken Ehrlich defended the show's backing of Brown on "CBS This Morning" on Monday. He said that he was "kind of rooting" for Brown.
"I just believe people deserve a second chance," said Ehrlich. "The year he had this year, really brought him back into the public. He really deserved a second chance."
Certainly, there are many fans of Brown ? "Team Breezy," as he calls them ? and they, too, took to social media to defend Brown. But some of those tweets were also held up as examples of questionable taste.
The site Buzzfeed gathered 25 tweets from Brown fans with lines such as: "I don't know why Rihanna complained. Chris Brown could beat me anytime he wanted to."
The feminism blog Feministe cited such reaction as evidence that "we as a society have a lot more work to do" to educate on domestic violence.
Rita Smith, executive director of the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, also questioned the message the Grammys were sending.
"If an awards show is going to highlight an artist, what an awesome message they could send if we got an update somehow about how that artist had changed in a positive way," said Smith. "Otherwise, the message becomes wait for a period of time and go on with business as usual."
Brown, who didn't attend last year's Grammys even though he was nominated for three awards, has sometimes portrayed himself as embattled. On Sunday, he tweeted, "Team breezy we have come (a long) way ... No matter what anyone says ... WE MADE IT!!"
In his acceptance speech and performances, he made no mention or gesture to his last, abbreviated trip to the Grammys. But he did tweet ? and then delete ? the message: "People who make mistakes and learn from them are ROLE MODELS too. I'm just happy to inspire growth and positivity."
Rihanna also performed Sunday, singing her hit "We Found Love" and transitioning into a duet of "Princess of China" with Coldplay's Chris Martin. Rihanna was nominated for four awards, including best album for her disc "Loud." She shared in the wins for best rap/sung collaboration and best rap song for Kanye West's "All of the Lights," with Kid Cudi and Fergie.
But many performers watching at home questioned Brown's involvement.
"Are Chris Brown's mom and dad CBS and Grammy Brown?" sarcastically wondered Eric Stonestreet of "Modern Family."
The singer Michelle Branch tweeted: "Trying not to go off on a rant but ... Chris Brown ... (bites tongue) have we forgiven him?"
"View" co-host Sherri Shepherd took a similar tact, writing, "Looks like all is forgiven (with) Chris Brown. That's all I'll say."
ANALYSIS | The notion that House Republicans would hand a powerful weapon to a Democratic Party president seems surprising. What may be more surprising is why Obama really isn't too excited about getting it.
The initial thinking is that House Republicans are giving this power to the White House, not Obama per se. That's because they expect him to be a one-term president. If so, they should have given it to him in 2011, when his reelection chances looked bleaker, rather than 2012, when his position seems stronger. GOP presidential candidates aren't inspiring much confidence.
If Obama gets reelected, he'll have the power to zap Republican items out of a budget. Why would the GOP want this to happen? Even a Republican President Mitt Romney could do the same, even to Republicans in Congress (along with Democrat provisions, of course).
And if this is really an amazing weapon, why isn't Obama more thrilled to get it? Perhaps the answer has more to do with the realization that this powerful line-item veto is actually a double-edged sword.
As a College Republican in 1988, I saw the line-item veto as the way to solve the nation's deficit problems, knocking out pet projects. All of the Republican candidates were for it, especially Vice-President George H. W. Bush. Most of the Democrats were members of Congress (Dick Gephardt, Paul Simon, Al Gore, etc.) who were opposed to it. The only one who wanted it was Massachusetts Governor Michael Dukakis. It didn't make sense to me at the time. But I came to realize that it was because Dukakis thought like an executive, and wanted the authority.
During the 2008 election, Obama was nearly silent on the subject of the line-item veto. In 2009, his press secretary Robert Gibbs, likened the potential use of it to a "test drive," hardly a ringing endorsement. Obama voted against the line-item veto as a senator.
So why didn't Obama want it? Those with congressional experience (like Obama and the House Republicans) know that presidents can allow small items to slip through big bills. They can explain to angry constituents that it was part of some omnibus measure, and they took the utilitarian approach, providing the greatest good for the greatest number.
But with a line-item veto, every small item can become a battleground. Take the contraception in the health care. Presidents will be held accountable for the small vetoes, and the non-vetoes as well (items allowed to pass). Presidents will be held accountable for every single small piece of legislation (even earmarks), and can no longer plead the big bill excuse. Obama seems to be painted into a box over that Keystone pipeline provision that was inserted into a bill. He'll either face angry motorists over gas prices or environmentalists from his base, and can't use the big bill excuse. Like Spiderman's "Uncle Ben" said, "with great power comes great responsibility."
