Closing arguments set to start in Peterson trial

JOLIET, Ill. (AP) ? Attorneys deliver closing arguments at Drew Peterson's trial Tuesday, after which jurors will begin deliberations on whether the state proved the former Illinois police officer murdered his third wife.

The sides make their final pitches after five weeks of testimony about the 2004 death of Kathleen Savio, whose body was found in a dry bathtub of her suburban home outside Chicago with a gash on the back of her head.

The 40-year-old's death was initially ruled to have been an accident. Only after Peterson's fourth wife, 23-year-old Stacy Peterson, went missing in 2007 was Savio's body exhumed and her death reclassified as a homicide.

Prosecutors will argue circumstantial evidence points to just one plausible explanation for Savio's death: that Peterson killed her. The defense will say not only is there no evidence tying Peterson to Savio's death, the state hasn't even proven that her death was murder.

Chris Koch delivers the state's closing, and Will County State's Attorney James Glasgow will do the rebuttal ? essentially the last word to jurors. The normally stone-faced Glasgow has shown flashes of anger at the trial, arguably the biggest of his career.

Closing for the defense is Joe Lopez, known for his brightly colored ties and aggressive, blunt courtroom style.

Peterson, 58, has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder. If convicted, he faces a maximum 60-year prison sentence.

Prosecutors have been barred from telling jurors Stacy Peterson is presumed dead or that her husband is the lone suspect in her disappearance during testimony ? and they can't allude to it during closings.

Among the challenges for the prosecution will be to spell out clearly how jurors can convict Drew Peterson absent any physical evidence and with not a single witness placing him at the scene of the alleged crime.

The heart of the state's case is normally barred hearsay ? statements Savio made to others before she died and that Stacy Peterson made before she vanished. Illinois passed a law in 2008, dubbed "Drew's Law," allowing hearsay at trials in rare circumstances.

The hearsay in the prosecution's four-week presentation of 30-plus witnesses included friends and relatives of Savio who testified that Savio told them Peterson could kill her and make it look like an accident.

Prosecutors on Tuesday are also likely to remind jurors of testimony from Stacy Peterson's pastor, Neil Schori, who said she told him her husband got up from bed and left the house in the middle of the night around the time of Savio's death.

As part of their three-day case, Peterson's lawyers called Peterson's and Savio's 19-year-old son, Thomas Peterson, to tell jurors he has never believed his father killed his mom.

You will not find me trying to recreate a recipe inspired by a fast food chain restaurant. But this is an exception. There is a fresh sandwich chain in England that makes a great breakfast sandwich, one that I almost always get in the airport before an early morning departure. It?s a long slice of baguette layered with crispy bacon and hard boiled eggs blended with mayonnaise and lots of black pepper. It?s a perfect portable breakfast, simple for an early morning but with just the right amount of punchy pepper.

Before sampling this sandwich, I was not much of an egg salad person. I always found it rubbery and full of things I don?t like. The idea of a simple salad of breakfast favorites appealed, and I whipped it up as my own personal treat for years. But recently, I gave a tea and made a selection of finger sandwiches. I couldn?t find an ingredient for one of my planned versions, so at the last minute I?whipped up a batch of this filling. It was far and away the biggest hit on the sandwich tray. So I decided it was worth sharing.

This is a simple recipe, so the ingredients must be good. I find farm fresh eggs and good bacon are key. My local pork producer makes a wonderful peppered bacon and I love to use that, though I adjust the amount of pepper I add. But make no mistake, pepper is crucial to making this simple salad pop, so don?t be shy.

Bacon and Egg Salad

6 strips of bacon
6 eggs
1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
1/2 cup mayonnaise
1 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons freshly cracked black pepper

Cook the bacon strips until very crispy. Drain on paper towels, patting off as much grease as possible. Leave to cool, then chop into small pieces.

Place the eggs in a saucepan and cover with water. Bring the water to a boil, then cook the eggs for 7 minutes. Fill a bowl with ice cubes and water, and when the 7 minutes is up, remove the eggs to the ice water and leave until cool. Peel the eggs, rinse off any shell bits and pat dry with paper towels. Slice two eggs in half and scoop the yolks into a bowl. Add the mustard, mayonnaise, salt and pepper and mash until smooth. Add the chopped bacon. Dice the whites and remaining whole eggs and add to the bowl. Gently stir until the mayonnaise has coated the eggs and bacon. Add more pepper or salt to taste. ?

Refrigerate, covered, for at least an hour or until ready to serve. The salad will keep in the fridge for 3 days.

Makes about 3 cups, enough for 4 well-stuffed sandwiches. Easily doubles.

Best of KKR in IPL 5

IPL 5: Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) started Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2008 to play twenty20 cricket championship. From 2008 to 2012, IPL had seen five seasons. IPL 5 started from 4th April and ended on 27th May 2012. It had nine teams with players from all over the world. The teams were Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Deccan Chargers (DC), Delhi Daredevils (DD), Kings XI Punjab (KP), Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Mumbai Indians (MI), Pune Warriors India (PWI), Rajasthan Royals (RR), and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). Among the teams DD, KKR, MI and CSK got qualified for the playoffs. Until Finals, Delhi Daredevils were the leading team with top points.

KKR: The present owner of Kolkata Knight Riders team is Shah Rukh Khan and Juhi Chawla, popular Bollywood actor and actress. Sourab Gangulay led the team in the first and third season. Brendon McCullam led the team in the second season and Goutham Gambhir is the captain for IPL 5, the fourth season. Their performance is not so good in the first three seasons but after the change in the captainship, they showed considerable improvement.

Journey Towards Finals: KKR team for the IPL 5 season is indebted to five stars, who carried their team towards the final goal.

Spinner Narine showed outstanding performance against Kings XI.
Lakshmipathy Balaji got the RCB batsmen in a transfix.
Shakib Al Hasan managed both Rahul Dravid and Ajinkya Rahane sweeping away Rajasthan Royals.
Though Yusuf Pathan is not in his form throughout this season, his contribution against the Dare Devils in the first qualifier is not at all a small thing.

Finally, KKR skipper Goutham Gambhir, who with his enthusiasm and untiring brilliance throughout the IPL 5 season along with his smashing 93 runs out of 51 balls against RCB, took his team to the finals against CSK.
Fight On The Finals:

The final match was held between the defending champions CSK in their home ground Chaupauk and Kolkata Knight Riders. The final innings started with CSK winning the toss. They made up 191 runs. A goal of 191 runs in the Chepauk ground against CSK, the two times winners of IPL, seemed almost impossible. Added to this, KKR skipper Goutham Gambhir got out in the first over itself leaving the audience to decide the CSK as the hat-trick winners of IPL. However, the man who turned the plate is Manvinder Bisla. He started hitting every ball and took 89 runs out of 48 balls. Jacques Kallis, who took 69 runs, stood as a great support to Bisla. Even after Bisla was out, Kallis was there and left the ground leaving 16 runs in 11 balls in store to win. CSK bowlers had a tough end and CSK skipper Dhoni tried everything he could but the IPL 5 championship went for the KKR. Manoj Tiwari with his two boundaries finished the match and got the cup.

Manvinder Sultansingh Bisla was the man of the match for his 89 runs in 48 balls, which is the main driving force to get the title. He took eight boundaries and five sixes. KKR skipper Goutham Gambhir is the second highest scorer of IPL 5 taking 590 runs. Sunil Narine of KKR was the Golden Player of the Season.
