Report: Turkey ex-military chief faces questioning (AP)

ANKARA, Turkey ? Turkey's state-run news agency says prosecutors want to question a former military chief as part of a trial of current and former officers alleged to have tried to destabilize the government through an Internet campaign.

The Anadolu Agency reported Tuesday that the prosecutor's office in Istanbul has asked retired Gen. Ilker Basbug to testify as a "suspect" on Thursday.

The military personnel are alleged to have funded websites aimed at discrediting the Islamic-rooted government in 2009. The accused have said they acted in a chain of command. Basbug led the military at the time. He retired in August 2010.

Hundreds of officers have been jailed as part of investigations into asserted plots to bring down the government.
