Football: Braga joins Benfica in Porto?s chase

FC Porto seemed to have caught a break after defeating Benfica, while the latter was caught up by Braga. However, a misstep by the ?drag?es? opened the door to the two suitors to close the gap, in a single point race.

Porto?s momentum was held by Acad?mica de Coimbra, who made Est?dio do Drag?o tremble. The visitors took the lead in the first half before a gloomy Porto, nothing like the one which had played Benfica the week before. It was a late penalty by Hulk that gave them one point, just enough to hang on to first place.

SC Braga stepped up with a 2-1 over last placed?Leiria and made sure the title run will be passing by them. Week after week Braga has been gaining ground and is now tied for second with Benfica. The Lisbon club, fresh from losing the lead, needed to shake off its recent performances at Pa?os de Ferreira, but things did not start in the best way. Pa?os took the lead and seemed to rattle Benfica, but the second half revealed a more determined visiting team. Benfica overturned the score and never again lost control over the match.

These results add up to a single point lead by Porto over Benfica and Braga, leading up to one of the closest title runs of the last few seasons.

The two spots that qualify for the UEFA Europa League have Mar?timo and Sporting Lisbon neck and neck after both clubs won.

Mar?timo made sure it would not lose any ground with a 2-1 win over Feirense?last Friday. The team had to wait until Sunday night to see if Sporting would stumble again, but S? Pinto?s men managed a clear 5-0 win over Vit?ria de Guimar?es.
